Introduction
As the rolling sand dunes and long stretches of barren lands are the trade mark of this dessert city, Jaisalmer may look as an ordinary desert city in the first glance, but it has a lot to offer to the visitors. This historic city used to function as a busy sea port during British era but all the trade routes were closed during partition of India in 1947. It remained a secluded place until tourism department brought this city back in the limelight. Thanks to the international exposure so far, Jaisalmer is rated one of the major tourist destinations in Rajasthan.


Places to Visit in Jaisalmer
� Jaisalmer Fort : Belonging to 12th century AD., this mighty fort is located at an altitude of 30 m on Trikutta Hills. The golden-yellow emanating from this fort motivated noted film director Satyajit Ray to make a movie on it with the title 'Sonar Kella' (the golden fort).
� Havelis : These buildings are the ethnic, ornate sand stone mansions of the Jaisalmer. A number of havelis are placed in Jaisalmer Fort but the best of them are dotted down in the town. These include Patwon Ki Haveli, Salim Singh ki Haveli and Nathmalji ki Haveli.
� Gari Sagar Tank : This water tank was once the water source of entire town. One prostitute is said to have built the beautiful arched gateway. She also added a Krishna temple here so that the king could not tear it down.
� Museums : A private institution, Jaisalmer Folklore Museum, boasts of a very rich collection of handicrafts, which depict the love story of Princess Moomal and King Mahendra etc. Some other museums are Government Museum, Desert Culture Centre and Museum.


Some Excursions
Golden Hued Fort You have numerous tourist attractions to explore located near Jaisalmer. Lodurva, a golden hued fort, is a sentinel to the bleak desert escape from its 80 m high perch on the hill. Wood Fossil Park has a picturesque rain water lake with numerous beautiful shrines around and a spectacular avaian variety. Sam Sand Dunes, Desert National Park and Amar Sagar Haveli are also worth visiting.


How to Reach Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer has its own airport (maintained by Indian Air Force), but it functions only during September to March. So, the tourists find the airport at Jodhpur (300 km) a preferable option. Local rail head at Jaisalmer is 10 minutes away from Gadi Sagar Pol. It takes 10 hours to reach Jaisalmer from Jodhpur. The train named 'The Palace on Wheels' taking off from Delhi is very popular among the tourists. You also can ride a bus or hire a taxi from major city centres of the state to reach Jaisalmer by road.
